Impressive insights into social networking November 9, 2009 Ms. Rl Heptonstall (Glasgow, UK) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'This is social media' by Guy clapperton. It's easy to get into, digest and apply, which means that you can start tinkering about with social media as soon as you start using the book - I say 'using' because it really should be read near a PC. It also acts as a sort of directory, so you can look up the bits you want to return to as and when they become applicable.
Guy takes quite a back to basics approach, carefully explaining the background behind social media and then gradually introducing each area. If you're a social media whizz then this book probably isn't for you, but if you're either completely alien to, or still to use the full social media mix, then it could definitely offer value for your business.
One aspect that really impressed me is that Guy doesn't try to convince his readers that all types of social media are relevant to every business. On the contrary, he encourages you to think about your own aims and objectives before starting with any of them - so you're far less likely to waste your time. There's also a good understanding of the cost of social media to your business, in terms of time, which again makes the book extremely practical.
Overall, thoroughly enjoyed it and hope to start seeing some results soon!
Very helpful primer March 4, 2010 Supertzar 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed reading this book. It's very well written and laid out, manages to cover the subject in enough detail for someone like me, interested in incorporating social media into their business model, and it avoids being patronising or resorting to jargon.
The book isn't an exhaustive guide to each site or network covered - and hooray for that frankly. The last thing I wanted to read was an 800 page treatise on Facebook and Twitter - for one thing, the landscape changes too rapidly to warrant this, and since the book is intended primarily for business use, any more detail would have made it an onerous chore to plough through. I learnt all I need to know about Twitter, the different blog templates, ecademy and others and feel far less daunted at some of the possibilities. Clapperton is careful to avoid evangelising about new media avenues and throughout the book points out that the business needs will dictate whether any of the social media can help.
A very good summary then. It gave me all I needed to understand which social media would be relevant to my business, how to go about incorporating them into my business and that's exactly what I was looking for.
Great resource - thanks November 25, 2009 L. Jones 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've enjoyed This is Social Media, a book which for many, is long overdue.
I'm constantly irritated by people 'lording it' in social media environments, claiming to be experts or gurus when they plainly aren't - dig a little deeper and they are the same sorts of people who reckon they can advise you on fail safe sales pitches which in reality, would send many potential customers running.
But this book gets it right, setting a realistic tone about what may or may not work for your business - the unique qualities of which you will know best.
The guidance is straight-talking and obviously based on real life success stories, while recognising that things are still changing at a fast pace.
This is Social Media strikes a fine balance between inspirational cases studies and down to earth directness. At its heart - as far as I could see - and what makes it work so well in my opinion - is an understanding that social media is first and foremost about engaging with people. If you want to use it for business and build a community around your company's ethos, you need to listen to what your customers want.
Anything else is just noise.
a primer for every business March 4, 2010 G. Gavigan Coincidently, at the same time as I decided to review this book, I had cause to check what had happened to a key local service.
I went to their their website for a service update, no information there so I phoned their call centre. After 15 minutes of listening to some really annoying messages I got through, to get only some basic information without any indication of what I really wanted to know, how serious was the problem. About 45 minutes later there was still no information on their website and I was still without my important service. There was a twitter feed with nothing particularly relevant on it, and an email address for the CEO...
A week later I haven't had a substantive reply. So far so not very "web 2.0" except for the bling.
All of this is a relevant precursor to this review, as it's probably usable as a case study on what not to do.
The book is an explanation, a tutorial and a guide to developing a marketing strategy which includes social networking. The technology is properly placed in a historical context. The book is readable with an authentic tone enriched by experience. It's jargon-free and approachable. It even sets out the case for not bothering.
Various tools are discussed compared and contrasted, the advantages and drawbacks are explored, costs and benefits discussed in a practical manner.
I've enjoyed reading it and shall read it again, I have learned something and hope to be able to use this book for its intended purpose and benefit accordingly. It's not often one can say that.
If you are wondering if there's anything in social networking for your business, this book is the one for you.
Excellent choice November 4, 2009 dhip ehpghenp 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I loved this book - Guy's writing style is easy to read and he breaks down what is quite a techie area into one that everyone can try. His suggestions on how to make your life easier by amalgamating all the various social networking sites will save you mountains of time - and he points you towards which ones you should be focussed on in the first place.
Thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get more out of social networking
